Read to Self and Math Exploration

This week in 1st Grade...
Reading:

* We practiced "Reading with Someone".
* We did Flashlight Reading.
* We read our National Geographic Young Explorers.

Math:
* We played Monster Squeeze.
* We played the Penny-Dice Game.
* We created Number Stories. 
* We practiced writing our numbers.

Writing:
* We wrote our opinion about insects.
* We wrote a note to Mrs. McIlveen's son.

Extra! Extra! Read All About It!
* We learned about insect adaptations!
* We practiced a school-wide fire drill!
* We filled the marble jar!

Raz-Kids



Image result for free computer clipartToday your child will be bringing home directions on how to access a reading program (Raz-Kids) at home. You can either go to www.kidsa-z.com or you can download the app. The children can use this as a way to listen to stories and then reread them to practice their reading skills at school and at home. This week we:

Week 2

This week we had a new friend join our class, let our first monarch butterfly go, and shared our "About Me" Posters. In Math we have been practicing counting and comparing numbers. Next week we will start learning about insects and continue to work on improving our reading stamina during Read to Self Time. Have a great weekend!

Supplies 2018-2019

SUPPLIES!!!
Dear Families,
         The following list of items would be most useful for this school year. If possible, please bring these items to “Meet Your Teacher” so that your child does not have to carry them on their first day of school.

For Classroom Community Use:
      1 plastic pencil box (large enough to fit crayons and pencils)
      Regular or Skinny Washable Markers
      Crayola colored pencils
      1 pocket folder with any picture/design on the front
                (for your child to use during independent work time)
       1 or 2 extra socks that will not be returned (to be used as whiteboard erasers)
      a 1 ½-inch, 3 ring binder with a clear plastic cover insert
  (this will be used for your child’s 1st grade portfolio)

For your child’s personal use, please send in a change of clothes in a plastic bag. Please LABEL your child’s clothing! These will be returned at the end of the school year.

Other helpful items for our classroom include:
      Skinny Black Expo Markers
      1 box of tissues
      Hand Sanitizer

      Composition Notebooks (any size or color)

Welcome First Graders and Families!

I am really excited for this school year with you! If you are able to, please e-mail me at eyork@sau16.org so that I can update my address book with your information. Feel free to include your name(s) and your child's name, along with something fun you did over the summer. This will help me to create a mailing list, before school officially starts. TOMORROW

For Fun Friday tomorrow (5/4) we will be having Board Game Afternoon. Please have your child bring a board game to school (if they would like to) that is Labeled with their name AND that they can play and explain the directions to friends. Thank you!
Also, tomorrow is the last day to order books for this month's Scholastic Book Order!

Cooperating in Math

Today, we spent time working together in a group to create a design in math using pattern block shapes. When we were finished, we created a graph showing the different shapes we used. I have attached some of the designs we made.
